Industrial Hygiene Services

The CORE Environmental staff of industrial hygiene (IH) consultants provides environmental inspections and consulting services throughout the Pittsburgh area. For over 20 years, homeowners, property managers, private businesses, HVAC companies, and insurance companies have trusted us with environmental testing and occupational health and safety management needs.

Indoor air quality issues are not a new concern. However, increased public awareness, scientific findings regarding potential health effects, and improved assessment techniques have greatly affected this area over the past decade.

From identifying hazardous materials to bacterial and fungal assessments, we can assist you with all aspects of environmental project management. Our mission is to help you protect your family, your employees, and the public. CORE Environmental has partnered with multiple local and regional companies that focus on indoor air quality.

Examples of IH services provided by CORE:

  • Testing for Health Hazards – Our industrial hygienists provide site inspections and test for hazards such as asbestos, mold, and other toxic contaminants including metals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Unfortunately, not all VOCs emit an odor when they “off-gas”, which means a person may be unknowingly breathing in these chemicals. Our industrial hygienists also provide oversight and air monitoring during asbestos abatements, and are licensed to read real time results in the field using a microscope. The data collected can be used to adjust containment designs, proper PPE for asbestos workers, and methods of asbestos removal.
  • Lead Paint Testing – Before the late 1970’s most paints contained lead. If your home or place of business was built before 1978, or you are painting an area that will be used by young children, paint testing is vital. Renovations, repairs, and paint removal projects are safest when a lead paint screening has been performed beforehand by one of our knowledgeable technicians. We know where to look to obtain the most accurate results.
  • Operations & Maintenance Plans – O&M Plans cover how and when certain types of maintenance should occur to avoid problems or safety concerns. They are preventative measures. An Operations and Maintenance (O&M) program for asbestos, for example, are developed for schools that require 3-year asbestos re-inspections. The O&M plan is a formulated plan that outlines location, type, condition, and most cost-effective option to maintain the asbestos containing material (ACM) inside the school.
  • Bacterial Assessments – Microorganisms are normally present in both indoor and outdoor environments. Some species of microorganisms if present indoors at high quantities can cause serious health problems. Our industrial hygienist can determine microorganism type and quantity through a site assessment that includes collecting either surface or air samples. Based on the sampling results, our hygienist can provide recommendations to effectively reduce indoor microorganism counts and reach your indoor air quality goals. CORE has partnered with multiple companies that specialize in improving indoor air quality, and our hygienists’ assessments are helping people achieve their indoor air quality goals today.
